ESTABLISHMENT OF THE INSTITUTE

The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) is a state  corporation established  through  the Science and Technology (Amendment) Act of 1979, as the national  body  responsible  for  carrying  out  health research in Kenya. KEMRI has grown from its humble beginning 27 years ago to become a regional leader in human health research. The Institute currently ranks as one of the leading centres of excellence in health research both in Africa as well as globally.

MANDATES

To conduct research in human health.
To co-operate with other organizations and institutions of higher learning in training programmes and on matters of relevant  research.
To liaise with other relevant bodies within and outside Kenya carrying out research and  related activities.
To disseminate and translate research findings for evidence-based policy formulation and implementation.
To co-operate with the Ministry of health, the Ministry for the time being responsible  for medical research, the National Council for Science and Technology and the Medical Science  Advisory Research Committee on matters pertaining to research policies and priorities.
To do all things as appear to be necessary,  desirable or expedient to carry out its functions.
