Dr. Matilu Mwau

Dr Matilu Mwau is an Infectious Diseases specialist working at the Kenya Medical Research Institute. He consults for a wide variety of governmental and non-governmental organizations locally and internationally in infectious diseases and in laboratory systems strengthening. His current research interests focus on HIV drug resistance, novel diagnostic approaches, arbovirology, placental malaria, HIV Immunology, and hepatitis. Matilu is currently mentoring 6 Master degree and 2 doctorate students at local universities. Dr Matilu holds a Medical degree from the University of Nairobi, a Master€™s degree in Tropical Medicine from Nagasaki University in Japan and a Doctorate in Molecular Medicine from Oxford University€™s Trinity College.  He has been the Director, Centre for Infectious and Parasitic Diseases Control Research, since 2008.

Dr. Nicholas I. Adungo

Dr. Nicholas Adungo is a chief research officer. Has worked in research since 1970, in the East African Community and in KEMRI since 1982. He has research interests in Malaria transmission and control at Community level, HIV/AIDS community based control & health education and molecular entomology.


Prof. Anne W. T. Muigai

Anne Muigai is a co-investigator in several projects running at the centre. She is a molecular population geneticist with over 15 years experience in the field of Genetics and Biotechnology. She holds a doctorate in Population Genetics and Molecular from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), Kenya and a Master of Science in Genetics from Kenyatta University Kenya.  She joined JKUAT in 1992 as a teaching assistant and has risen from this position to that of an Associate Professor in the Department of Botany.  She has held several academic and administrative positions.  She was the first Chairperson of the Department of Botany (1994 -1998) and was instrumental in recruitment and training of staff.  She was the Director of the Institute for Biotechnology Research at JKUAT between May 2005 and March 2008 where she launched a Master of Biotechnology programme. She was also responsible for the University€™s commercial tissue culture laboratory.  She has been a Visiting Scientist at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) in Nairobi, Kenya (2004-2010) where she was the coordinator of a research project on the characterization of indigenous sheep genetic resources of Kenya.  Currently she is mentoring 15 Masters and five PhD students and has served an external examiner for several MSc students from Kenyatta University.  She is the current Master of Science students€™ coordinator in the Department of Botany.

Mrs. Freda A. Odhiambo

Freda Andayi Odhiambo is a Senior Research Officer at the centre. She undertakes research in social aspects of diseases such as leprosy & other skin diseases, HIV/AIDS & opportunistic infections. She has carried out research in public health. She is currently studying microbial resistance to drugs and emerging & re-emerging diseases. Freda holds a Bachelors€™ Degree in Education, Science (BEd.Sc) from the University of Nairobi; a Masters Degree in Microbiology from the same University and has completed the coursework for her PhD studies in Medical Microbiology enrolled at ITROMID. She joined KEMRI in the position of research officer in 1990 having been a high school teacher and Principal of the same under the Teachers€™ Service Commission for seven years. 
Mr. Tom Mokaya
Tom Mokaya has been an assistant research officer at the centre since 2007. He has previously worked in the pharmaceutical industry and Kisii District Hospital before joining KEMRI. His current research interests focus on fungi infections, HIV drug resistance and latent tuberculosis infection. Mokaya holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Doctor Bhim Rao Ambedkar University India and Post Graduate Diploma in Pharmacy from Central Institute of Management, India.

Allan Ole Kwallah

Allan ole Kwallah is currently a Research Training Fellow (Mar 2010 - Mar 2013) in the Consortium for National Health Research (CNHR) funded project working in Dr. Matilu Mwau's group. He is registered at the Institute  of Tropical Medicine (ITROMID) of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology for his doctorate studies. Before joining Dr. Mwau's team, Allan worked for Inspection Diagnostics Analysis Consultancy Labs (IDAC) in Riyadh, Saudia, performing veterinary diagnostics. He has been a graduate fellow at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) working on small ruminants genetic resources.  He holds a B.Sc. Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and an M.Sc. Biochemistry from JKUAT.  His interests are in vaccine development, arboviruses, animal genetic resources and improved diagnostics of neglected tropical diseases both human and veterinary.
Samson Muuo
Samson Muuo Nzou is a virologist and works at the Nagasaki university institute of tropical medicine. His current research interests focus on Neglected Tropical Diseases, Aboviruses, HIV and Tuberculosis. He holds bachelor€™s of science degree in medical laboratory sciences and a Masters degree in medical virology from the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. He is also registered with medical technicians and technologist board of Kenya. He has been the Project Manager and Research Officer, Bioplex Project, NUITM-KEMRI since 2010 to date.

Olipher Makwaga

Olipher Makwaga is an assistant research officer at the centre and a Master of Science Student at ITROMID - Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. Her interests are in HIV & opportunistic infections, emerging & re-emerging diseases. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Nairobi.
Ferdinard  O. Adungo
Ferdinard Adungo is a research officer. Before joining KEMRI, he worked with the ministry of youth affairs through a local community-based organization and also taught science in several schools. His main research interests are in HIV Molecular Epidemiology, Antiretroviral Drug Resistance and HIV Immunology. He is also interested in Bioinformatics and Parasitology especially in helminthological studies as a cause of morbidity in resource-scarce settings. Adungo holds a Bachelor of Science degrees and a Master€™s degree in Immunology from Kenyatta University. He has been involved in bench work since 2004.

Lucy Okubi

Lucy is a young upcoming scientist with interest in infectious diseases. A trained microbiologist with a Bachelor of Science degree in microbiology, Moi University, she is an assistant research officer at CIPDCR working with Dr. Matilu Mwau under the CNHR funded project on arboviruses.
Mary Waihenya
Mary Waihenya is an Assistant Research Officer in the CNHR  funded arbovirus project at CIPDCR. Her current research interests focus on Arbovirology and therapeutic nutrition. She holds a degree in Biochemistry from Kenyatta University.
Dr. Mary Inziani Muyeku
Dr. Mary is a clinical research pediatrician at the centre. She works in the CNHR funded arbovirus project. She holds a Bachelor degree in medicine from the University of Nairobi, a Masters degree in tropical medicine from Nagasaki University and a Masters degree in pediatrics from the University of Nairobi. Her main interests are in pediatric infectious diseases.
