Scientific Steering Committee (SSC):

This Committee is composed essentially of all the Directors of Centres, Assistant Directors, Chairmen of Research Programme Committees, and any other persons that the Director of KEMRI may appoint to serve on it.

The duties of the Scientific Steering Committee include:

  1. Reviewing and approval of all research project proposals from Research Centres submitted by the respective Directors.No research project may be started without the written approval of this Committee. The approved proposals are forwarded to the Scientific Programmes Committee for ratification. The project may start as soon as the SSC (and Ethical Review Committee) approval has been obtained.
  2. Reviewing the Minutes of the meetings of the various Centre Scientific Committees. In its role of monitoring the progress of all research activities at Centres the SSC receives the minutes of the Centre Scientific Committees as compiled by the Secretary of SSC.
  3. Presenting regular reports and updates to the SPC on matters affecting the total effective scientific performance of the various Research Centres. This includes recommendations on staff and equipment.
  4. Developing and promoting continuing education programmes for all the Institute staff.

The Research Centre Scientific Committee of each Research Centre is composed of all research staff of the Research Centre, i.e. research officers, technologies, technicians, and visiting scientific personnel.

Activities of the Research Centre Scientific Committee:

  1. The Director of the Research Centre shall be the Chairman of the Research Centre Scientific Committee.
  2. The Centre Director shall ensure that all project proposals and research publication manuscripts are presented to the Research Centre Scientific Committee for discussion before such documents are forwarded to the Scientific Steering Committee or the Publications Committee as the case may be.

Research project proposals:

  1. The Research Centre Scientific Committee shall review thoroughly all research project proposals generated at the Research Centre. This Committee must ensure that the project proposals generated are within the mandates of the Research Centre. It must also ensure that research proposals developed by scientific staff at the level of Research Officer, Assistant Research Officer or Technologist, have had the appropriate input and guidance of the staff at the level of Senior Research Officer and above. Only staff at the level of Technologist and above is qualified to be an investigator. Where an investigator is not a permanent member of KEMRI, then this person€„¢s curriculum vitae should accompany the project proposal for review by the Centre Scientific Committee.
  2. Submission of project proposals: A project proposal approved by the Research Centre Scientific Committee should be submitted through the Director of the Centre with the appropriate Official Forwarding Form certifying that the proposal has been duly reviewed by the Research Centre Scientific Committee and approved for submission to the Scientific Steering Committee. The Official Forwarding Form must not be restructured or modified.
