PROF. SAMUEL KARIUKI NAMED ACTING DIRECTOR GENERAL KEMRI

The Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Health has appointed Prof. Samuel Kariuki, Director, Research and Development at KEMRI as the Acting Director General KEMRI, replacing Prof. Yeri Israel Kombe who has served the Institute in the same capacity for the last three years.

During a brief ceremony conducted by the new Chairman, KEMRI Board of Management, Dr. Daniel Mbinda Musyoka and witnessed by several Board Members among them; Prof. Peter Ngure, Dr. Eric Ogwora, Dr. Fatma Haji, Dr. Naomi Mutea and Ms. Kanini Nthiga and senior management team, the Chairman congratulated Prof. Kariuki and pledged board support to enable him perform his duty as the Acting CEO.

“On behalf of the Board of Management, I wish to Congratulate Prof. Kariuki as he takes the mantle of leading this important and prestigious Institute which is a reference centre of excellence in Human health research in Africa,” he said.

Prof. Sam Kariuki is congratulated by the Chairman of the KEMRI Board of Management, Dr. Daniel Mbinda shortly after he was appointed Acting Director General and CEO KEMRI.

Prof. Kariuki, holds a Bachelor of Vetenary degree from University of Nairobi, a Master of Science in Pharmacology & Toxicology from the same university and a PhD in Tropical Medicine from University of Liverpool, UK. Until his appointment, Prof. Kariuki was the Director in charge of Research and Development a position he has held since 2018.

Prof. Kariuki also holds several esteemed international positions among others; Chair, Global Antimicrobial Resistance Partnership (GARP)-Kenya, International Fellow of the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, Wellcome Sanger Honorary Faculty and a visiting Professor of Tropical Microbiology, Oxford University, UK. He has also served as the Director of the KEMRI’s Centre for Microbiology Research (CMR) based in Nairobi.
