CENTER FOR GEOGRAPHIC MEDICINE RESEARCH COAST-KILIFI

ABOUT US

The Centre for Geographic Medicine Research, Coast (CGMR(C) is responsible for conducting clinical research to understand disease epidemiology as well as undertaking clinical trials. The Centre which is based in Kilifi County is also involved in research to understand the biology of parasitic and infectious disease and the interactions between the host and pathogen.

 

Functions

(i) To conduct research in infectious diseases, parasitic diseases, and Non-Communicable diseases

(ii) Research in the divisions of Vector Biology and One-health, Parasitic and Microbial disease epidemiology, immunology and Molecular Biology

(iii) Facilitate service delivery

(iv) Initiate the development and review of the Centre’s funding strategies.;

(v) Establish partnerships and collaborations to support Centre’s operations;

(vi) Developing proposals for funding;

(vii) Linking development partners with identified strategic projects/programs;

(viii) Coordinating the Implementation of funding programs and maintaining their impact.

(ix) Research translation to policy at county and National levels

(x) Capacity building

 

In carrying out its functions the Centre will be organized into the following Divisions: –

(III) MICROBIOLOGY RESEARCH DIVISION

(IV) VECTOR BIOLOGY DIVISION

(V) SUPPORT SERVICES DIVISION

CLINICAL RESEARCH DIVISION

The Clinical Research Division focuses on clinical work to understand disease profiles and investigate the transmission patterns. It also oversees Kilifi Health and Demographic Surveillance System (KHDSS). All clinical trials are spearheaded by the Division.

b) Functions:

(i) Oversee Clinical research

(ii) Oversee Kilifi Health and Demographic Surveillance System (KHDSS)

(iii) To understand Epidemiology of malaria among children/adults

(iv) Hemoglobin levels and pattern of change

(v) Host genetic factors associated with resistance or susceptibility to severe malaria and other diseases

ii. BIOSCIENCES DIVISION

Biosciences Laboratory Research focuses on the molecular biology, epidemiology and immunology of infectious diseases. Its focus is mainly immunology and Molecular analysis of pathogens and Human-Parasite interactions.

MICROBIOLOGY DIVISION

The Microbiology Division offers diagnostic support to the clinical research team and microbiology researchers and this will include the microbe detection, antibiotic drug resistance and sensitivity profiles.

VECTOR BIOLOGY DIVISION

The Vector Biology Division at CGMR-Coast has existed since 1990. In was mainly a malaria entomology unit which sought to understand malaria transmission dynamics then. Currently the Division has expanded her role to have keen interest in all mosquito-borne diseases, their transmission and control.

 

Functions

1. Malaria Transmission and epidemiology

(i) To understand malaria vector vectoral systems along the Kenyan coast

(ii) To understand malaria transmission dynamics in different eco-epidemiological settings

(iii) To determine the blood feeding preferences of malaria vectors

(iv) To understand the malaria vector behaviors (Feeding, resting, mating)

(v) To characterize the sibling species composition of Anopheles gambiae and An. funestus complexes

(vi) To understand malaria vectors larval ecology

(vii) Urban malaria and its control

(viii) Implement integrated vector management strategies for control of malaria

(ix) Understand the Anopheles gambiae genome using molecular tools

(x) Malaria vectors surveillance and linkages with malaria control Unit (MCU) for data bases on malaria entomology

 

2. Insecticide Resistance in mosquitoes

(i) Understand the phenotypic profiles of Insecticide Resistance along the Kenyan coast

(ii) Understand the mechanisms of Insecticide resistance along the Kenya Coast (Genotypic and biochemical)

(iii) To Develop strategies to manage Insecticide Resistance

3. Emerging and Re-emerging diseases such as ZIKA, Dengue, Chikungunya

(i) Characterize the transmission of arboviruses along the Kenyan coast (Urban, forested and rural ecologies)

(ii) Characterize the arboviral mosquitoes

(iii) Larval ecology of Aedes and Culicine mosquitoes

(iv) Control of arboviral mosquitoes

 

4. Neglected Tropical Diseases transmitted by mosquitoes such as Filariasis

(i) Understand mosquito transmission dynamics of filariasis

(ii) Concomitant infection in Anopheles mosquitoes (malaria and filariasis con-infection)

(iii) To evaluate the impact of Global Lymphatic filariasis Elimination Program along the Kenyan coast

(iv) Integrated vector and disease control strategies

 

5. Mosquito Containment Unit (Insectary)

(i) Insectary rearing of Anopheles gambiae s.s.

(ii) Develop a Kilifi Strain of Anopheles gambiae s.s and adopt it to insectary rearing

(iii) Develop an Experimental Huts for Anopheles studies

(iv) Mosquito gametocyte infection studies
