For over 20 years, KEMRI researchers have advocated the use of Insecticide treated bed nets in Malaria endemic areas as part of combined strategies in dealing with Malaria. This is with registered success in malaria reduction in Western and Coast regions among other areas in Kenya.

KEMRI is conducting a study seeking to improve the half-life of the natural pyrethrins using nanotechnology so that they can be used for bed nets instead of pyrethroids.

Most industrialized countries are phasing out the use of synthetic pyrethroids and replacing them with other alternatives including using natural pyrethrins.

The challenge is that pyrethrins have very short half-life hence has not been used in the insecticide treated nets.

It is against this background that we wish to clarify that although pyrethroids are generally known to be harmful, the levels of concentrations when used in manufacturing bed nets are completely safe and strictly adhere to World Health Organizations (WHO) guidelines.

We therefore wish to clarify that insecticide treated nets are safe for use and consequently allay any possible fears that may have been raised by the media.
