KEMRIs Stand at the Agricultural Society of Kenya show in Mkomani Grounds, Mombasa County.

The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) has been awarded two awards at the Mombasa International Trade & Agricultural Show held at the Coastal city of Mombasa.

The Institute topped in The Best Display and Services in the Health Sector and Pharmaceuticals and The Best Display and Services in the Research and Development at the annual regional fate.

In keeping with its tradition of previous years, the Institute mounted memorable interactive displays of its research work that also include a strong community engagement component.

Large audio-visual screens mounted at stand also explained some of the Corporate Social Outreach activities and community engagement activities carried out by the Institute especially, the Centre for Geographic Medicines Research, Coast (CGMRC) in Kilifi and KEMRI Kwale stations.

Also on display are laboratory equipment by the entomology team with mosquito models, homestead and environmental models besides the some of the equipment used in vector control.

Recent KEMRI research studies on the Universal Health Coverage and Cancer at the Coastal areas are also on display.

A magnet for most show enthusiasts is herbal medicines section displaying an assortment of traditional medicines including Tungicide used for the treatment and management of jiggers, a herbal salt known as Papina, for mild hypertension, Moringa Oleifera, a food supplement and immune booster and the TMR1 capsules, for malaria treatment. Also on display is Zedupex , a product for management and treatment of herpes simplex virus. Another important inclusion is information on Antibiotic Resistance Development and its impact and one on Pediatric Convulsions.

The Kilifi Demographic Social Survey (KDSS) which creatively curved down a model of the Geographic area complete with sophisticated communications technology is a crowd puller. Studies also on display include Sickle Cell Anemia, Vector Biology, TUMIKIA, a mass school deworming initiative and were also on display.

But it is the section that targeted kids that remains ever green at the events throughout. The kids’ corner was specially made for the young show enthusiasts to play games, read health-related comics and do lots of paint work on materials they were eventually allowed to carry home alongside some goodies that included cadies and balloons.

The ASK Awards coincide with the release of an international ranking by a global ranking of research and academic Institutions that confirms KEMRI's leadership standing as the leading Health Research Institution in Africa.
