Grantsmanship Department was initially known as, (The Office of Research Development (ORD). The office was established through the International Extramural Associates Research Development Awards (IEARDA) Grant, from National Institutes of Health in 2006/2007.

During its establishment, the aim was to have a structure with dedicated officer (s) who were expected to gain essential training locally and internationally.

It was envisaged that the staff would acquire specialized skills in research administration, grants management, resource mobilization for conducting research, capacity building, structured training and knowledge sharing in pre-and post grants award management.
